Broken English…

~Tuesday~  Tonight I watched the 2007 film Broken English, which is the final film of five that I’d decided to watch from a list (of 50) called “The Best Movies You Never Saw.”

Bob was kind enough to request this film for me in his NetFlix account, for which I’m thankful.

I really didn’t know any of the actors in this movie, although I’ve heard of a few:

  • Parker Posey — I thought I knew her, but in reality I think who I pictured in my mind as her was actually Molly Ringwald, or perhaps Winona Ryder. And at one time during this movie, I thought she looked like Sandra Bullock, and at another time and angle, like Karen Carpenter.
  • Gena Rowlands — Although I thought I had seen her in another of her movies, during a quick look through her filmography, I don’t recall seeing any of the movies on the list. I might have been confusing her in my mind with Susan Sarandon. Bless my movie star-challenged mess.
  • Peter Bogdanovich — I only recognized the name as someone having done something with (the inimitable) La Streisand.

Synopsis: Nora Wilder is freaking out. Everyone around her is in a relationship, is married, or has children. Nora is in her thirties, alone with job she’s outgrown and a mother who constantly reminds her of it all. Not to mention her best friend Audrey’s “perfect marriage.” But after a series of disastrous dates, Nora unexpectedly meets Julien, a quirky Frenchman who opens her eyes to a lot more than love.

My thoughts and observations about the movie:

  • While I didn’t dislike this movie at all, I did wonder how it made it on a list of best movies you never saw. I mean it was good, but I haven’t even thought about it since it ended on Tuesday night.
  • One of its delights for me was Julien, played by Melvil Poupaud. I’m a sucker for anything French (with French men right up there at the top of the list, second only to food), and he was cute to boot—both his character and looks.
  • For one brief moment at the end, I was hopeful for an ending that would please me, but alas, a Hollywood ending ensued.
