Lipstick & Liquor…

~Tuesday~  Tonight I watched Lipstick & Liquor, another movie I’d never heard of until scrolling through the list of movies available free with my Amazon Prime subscription.

Although I didn’t see it marked explicitly as a documentary, I assumed from its write-up that it was, and I like documentaries, so I went for it. Being fairly late in the evening, it also appealed to me that it was only 78 minutes long.

The synopsis

Lipstick & Liquor explores the secret in the suburbs. A growing number of women are abusing alcohol and becoming alcohol dependent.

My thoughts and observations

  • This movie was interesting enough. I didn’t really care for one of the experts, Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychotherapist from Washington, DC.
  • Themes touched on:
    • Alcoholism (of course)
    • Shame
    • Societal stereotypes
    • Being treated as a criminal as opposed to someone with a disease
    • Family histories
    • “Supermoms”
  • My favorite line from the movie was when one of the women was describing what a bitch (her word) she’d become at the worst of her drinking, when she had a boyfriend at the time who also really liked to drink, and even he wouldn’t drink with her any more, and she said shaking her head, “When your drinking buddy leaves you, you’ve got a problem.”
  • I was struck by the one recovering woman who kept a journal—on paper, with a pencil.
  • Is it bad that at about one-third of the way through this movie I wanted a drink? Here’s a selfie honoring the film’s name with said drink:

A selfie of me with a bourbon and soda in my hand and red 'lipstick' drawn over my lips with Microsoft Paint.
  • I give this movie one thumb up.

Have you seen this movie? If so, what did you think of it?
