Holiday Weekend in Wilmington — Day 1

Robert and I left for Wilmington at about 11:30.

I dropped off mail at the Avent Ferry post office — a short note to Amy Duda in response to her letter requesting a $5 or $10 donation to her band’s booster club. I enclosed a check for $50.00.

We hit virtually no traffic on the way to the beach, and I was thankful that we were able to avoid the inevitable after work rush out of Raleigh toward the beach on this holiday weekend.

We stopped at an Arby’s in Warsaw (Exit 364), and had two Juniors each, split a large order of fries, and each had a cup of water.

We checked in to the Quality Inn on Market Street without incident. Kea checked us in, who is the same one who stunned Joe with the infamous, “Do you prefer top or bottom?” question the last time we stayed here.

After a while, we checked in with Joe by phone to get an ETA from him. He was about 40 minutes away.

Once he arrived, we met him at the pool with some ice, cups, my flask of bourbon, some colas, some cheddar cheese flavored hard pretzel bits, a large container of sliced, and seeded, watermelon, a smaller container of sliced and seeded watermelon soaked in vodka, and some beer.

We had a nice, leisurely, relaxing afternoon by the pool. After about an hour of Joe sharing his beer with Robert, he (Joe) made a convenience store run, and returned with an 18-pack of beer, and a bag of Lays Cheddar & Sour Cream potato chips, which, between the three of us, we devoured.

I did 30 minutes worth of laps in the pool to meet my 30-minute exercise commitment to Let Eagles Soar, my IBM Wellness “Spring into Summer” team.

We had dinner at Elizabeth’s, where Joe and I each ordered Strombolis, and Robert ordered a Sausage, Green Pepper, & Onion Hoagie Sandwich. We all had the small Italian House Salad beforehand. It was all good.

Robert and I grabbed an hour-or-so disco nap before getting ready to go out.

We checked in with Joe, and we agreed to just meet at Costello’s, as he wanted to drive separately, stop for a cup of coffee at Drunkin’ Donuts, and make an ATM pit stop on the way.

The place was pretty empty tonight, surprisingly so for a holiday weekend. As always, “Alan” stopped by and chatted with us for a while. She can do some chatting.

After his talking for a while, Joe said to me, “What time is it?”

“Time for Alan to talk to someone else,” I replied aside.

Kurt was bartending, and he kept us laughing most of the night.

I’d never heard the particular piano player who was playing tonight, but enjoyed him. Daniel only terrorized us with one or two songs tonight. The music stopped fairly early.

Once it stopped, I asked Kurt to put the videos on, and I saw the video to Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl for the first time.

At about 1:15 or so, we asked to close out our tab, said good night to Joe, and headed back to the hotel.
