But Are You Willing to Ignore Months and Months of Reliable Intelligence?

Teen: I’m gonna run for sturgeon general one day.

Father: A sturgeon is a fish. It’s Surgeon General, and you can’t run for it, the president appoints you.

Teen: Then I’ll make him appoint me.

Father: You also have to be a doctor, and in the military… And we know you’re not smart enough to be a doctor.

Teen: [Puzzled, offended.]

Father: You could run for Secretary of Defense, though, and you don’t really have to be that smart to do that.

Teen: Cool, I like guns!

Who Told You about God?

Mom: So, what kind of animals do you think we will see at the zoo?

Small boy: I think elephants and snakes… Mom? Are there also pretend things there, like dinosaurs and God?

Mom: I think we need to have a talk when we get home.

I was expecting a nice, quiet Saturday morning on campus. Not so.

Evidently there was some kind of statewide swim meet going on in Carmichael. The place was teeming with folks—kids, parents, and school buses from around the state. Which, of course to me, translated into a parking quagmire.

I ended up parking at the Coliseum Deck and walking over to Talley. Nice, brisk walk at 9:00 in the morning on a Saturday.

<singing>It’s 9:00 on a Saturday. The regular crowd shuffles in.</singing> But I digress…

We, the student chapter of the STC, were there to help the professional chapter of STC host a small conference. We agreed to be there at 9:00 to help set up. The conference was supposed to start at 10:00.

Sarah and Kim got there at 9:00, and I got there at 9:30. Not an STC-Carolina person in sight.

At 9:40, the first one arrives, this woman in an absolute tizzy, who starts barking orders at us—including at Sarah who is not a student at all but our faculty advisor—trying to making her poor planning our problem.

When she walked away, I said to Sarah, “You hold her and I’ll slap her.”

It was a fun night of dancing tonight. We had a good number of dancers, and before it was all said and done, there was a pretty decent crowd there.

On the way home, right after turning left from Western Boulevard onto Avent Ferry, I spotted two or three cop cars with their blue lights a-flashing at the Centennial Parkway intersection ahead. I wasn’t sure if it was an accident or a road block.

I got in the right lane, turned into the apartments there, made a loop in their parking lot, turned back out, left onto Avent Ferry, back to the light, left on Western, and went home via Gorman Street.
