A pastiche, Ellen’s “common cement” address, Myra’s wedding, a cookout, and a night out…

I thought up this pastiche this morning after seeing the video below.

“If a woman loses pace with her companions, perhaps it is because she hears a different drummer. Let her step to the music in which she hears, however measured, or far away.” ~Henrietta Davida Thorette~

For some reason this reminds me of Annie Lennox’s “Why?” Love ’em both.

I’ve been meaning to listen to Ellen’s commencement address at Tulane, and finally did this morning. I just love Ellen. (And bonus, I thought it’d be a 20- to 30-minute speech, but it was only 9.5 minutes.)

I can’t even begin to imagine how different my life might have been had I had someone say these things to me at my graduation from college.

Today, I was honored to be a guest at the wedding of one of my favorite peeps on the planet.

It was a very lovely affair, and it was nice to meet Myra’s relatives, several of whom I’ve heard lots of stories about. I was particularly glad to meet her sister Julie and her partner of seven years, Kim.

Following the ceremony, there was a picnic lunch right in the area in which the ceremony was held, and I liked every single thing in the spread: subs (choices included ham, turkey, and veggie; potato chips, a killer spinach dip, tortilla chips and salsa, crackers and various cheeses (cheddar, swiss, and pepper jack), grapes (green and purple), salted peanuts, and honey-roasted peanuts. Yum! Yum! Yum!

Along with two cakes, one chocolate on chocolate and another vanilla on vanilla, there were also some cookies (chocolate, sugar, and oatmeal and raisin). It was all good.

Myra was gracious enough to walk me out, and while walking she caught me up on her work situation, which is not great with her job being eliminated as of this past Friday.

Robert came over at about 3:15, and shortly after that, we stopped by Food Lion to pick up some potato salad on our way to a cookout at Joe’s. It was Robert’s first time seeing Joe’s house. We had some most delicious burgers on the grill, along with the potato salad, and some snacks of Crunchy Cheetos and Honey BBQ potato chips. Life is good.

We left at about 6:00, and back home, Robert headed back to Durham, and I talked to nappy for a couple of hours.

I met Joe at Flex at 9:30 for karaoke. It was pretty crowded out with tomorrow being a holiday. At about midnight, I wanted to go home, but Joe wanted a snack, so we went over to The Borough, where we had some fries.

Afterwards, we walked back to Flex, where we were parked, and as we left, Joe called me to ask me if I’d noticed what was going on in the street—on Morgan Street between the Ugly Monkey and the Buckhead Saloon. I had. There were two groups of people walking into the street from each side of the road, at least that’s what it looked like to me—like something out of West Side Story.

This morning, this article was in the news:

Former NBA player arrested in Raleigh bar fight

Jayson Williams

Police arrested former NBA player Jayson Williams at about 1:45 a.m. Monday after a fight broke out at the Ugly Monkey club, 101 S. Harrington St.

No one was hurt in the fight, officers said.

Williams, 41, was charged with one count of simple assault, and he was released on $1,000 bond at about 4:30 a.m.

He has had several previous run-ins with the law.

In 2002, he was accused in the shooting death of his limo driver. He was reportedly playing with a shotgun when it went off.

He was convicted of trying to cover up the shooting, but a jury deadlocked on a manslaughter charge against him.

In April, New York police officers used a stun gun on Williams after reports that he was suicidal and violent.

During his NBA run, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets.
