How a misinterpreted response, which became a significant white lie, ended up a healthy daily habit.

~Tuesday~  Last Wednesday, I had my semi-annual teeth cleaning at the dentist I’ve been going to for over 30 years, and with the hygienist I always request, going so far as to schedule my next appointment on a day that she’s scheduled to work.

Man (not me) in a dentist chair with a hygienist picking at his teeth

We have the kind of relationship, where last year she said, “Is it your parents’ 60th anniversary this year?” because she remembers that 10 years ago we had a big bash for them for their 50th.

But I digress…

So, on Wednesday, she was doing her thing picking between my teeth, and she said, “You’re pretty good at flossing, aren’t you?”

“Yeah,” I said, with no further qualification.

“It shows,” she replied.

Fast forward after:

  1. Finishing scraping the tartar build-up off my teeth,
  2. Jamming toothpaste all up in between my teeth while polishing them, and
  3. Flossing the hell out of them

the dentist comes in, and she says to him: He flosses every day.

To which the dentist said, “Wow. You don’t hear that every day.”

Huh??? Really??? Did I say that? I didn’t. Although, I didn’t correct anybody.

Well, here it is Tuesday, and I have flossed every day since then.

I’m not sure if I’m trying to do penance (and if so, for what), or if it’s that I like my hygienist so much that I don’t want to make a liar out of her next time.
