A facebook “John’s” group, chores, an excruciating class, and late night work work…

Social Networking Craziness

I’m a member of facebook, which is a social networking group (like myspace), only you have to be a student somewhere in order to join. Today, I got an email from someone named “John,” who has started a facebook group called, “Ok, so my name’s John, not Jonathan… Get it right.

The description of the group is as follows:

For all of us whose name on the birth certificate is John, yet it never fails that all kinds of people will call us Jonathan, even after you ask them not to.

If ya wanna be an officer, just post a request… along with ur title.. unless u want me to make one up for you… which i wouldn’t suggest.

Ok, so as far as i can tell… there’s no real facebook group coalition of “John’s”…. it’s cool if it doesn’t work out, and i definitely don’t wanna make this one of those “biggest group challenges” or whatever…. but if you feel like it, invite some John’s ya don’t know… I normally just type in John then a last name… and invite ’em all… I’ve done Smith, Martin, Murray, and Lewis… have at it… if you have the time.

I thought, “What the hell?” At the time I joined — earlier today — 200 people named John had joined the group already. Skimming through, I was amazed at how many were named John Martin! Here’s a collage of the John Martin’s in at the time. Hovering over them will display their school information.

I organized my COM598M papers, finished up the NCSU Usability Project Notebook, unloaded the dishwasher, did two loads of laundry, and read an assignment for my ENG525 class.

I mailed two cards at the Avent Ferry post office on the way to class.

I got to class with one minute to spare.

E-X-C-R-U-C-I-A-T-I-N-G class! Excruciating!

We started watching a 60-minute program with 40 minutes left to the class.

At one point, the professor wrote “Baily et al. (1993)” as one of the board full of notes that he writes each class, and said, “So what did you conclude from that Bailey et al. reading?”

I’d just like to note that our readings are not cited at all, so the “1993” reference is of zero help in identifying the correct reading. I’m just saying.

We all looked at him as if to say, “Are you kidding? We’ve read about 15 articles over the last three weeks, of which that was one. Not only that, it’s one of the ones from two or three weeks ago, because you’re behind that far in the lectures. There are several multiple-authored articles, potentially more than one with ‘Bailey’ in the list.”

I left class, once again, frustrated to the max.

I drove into work, where I prepared for my 1-on-1 meeting with my manager tomorrow.
