German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord. |
I would expect this little tidbit to come with a caveat: Make sure the cough doesn’t cause the area that is about to be stuck to move.
For instance, I don’t think I’d do the cough trick if I was getting a needle in my neck.
I did about an hour-and-a-half of Service-Learning work today—all in preparation for three meetings taking place this week.
I did a couple of hours of work on the first draft of the slides I’m going to use in my oral defense of my project in front of the faculty at the end of this semester.
We are going to present these draft slides over two classes, starting Thursday, and I’m one of the first people to go.
Nathan called me today to tell me about Altria, which owns Phillip Morris USA and Kraft. On March 30th, Altria intends to “distribute its shares” as part of “Kraft spin-off.” The expectation is that this will improve Altria’s overall earnings.
I gave him the nod to buy about $4,000 worth of Altria’s stock. Some analysts are projecting a possible 25% growth over the next year due to this move. 25% of 4000 is a 1000. I’ll take a chance.
I met with Dr. Dicks this afternoon to get my PIN (notice how I didn’t say “PIN number”—and neither should you) for the Fall semester. I am going to be taking my two final courses in the program this Fall. Yay!
ENG 515 Rhetoric of Science and Technology is my last “required” course in the Master’s program, and bonus, it is most likely going to be taught by the new professor, Dr. Brent Faber.
The other course that I’m taking is a ENG 693 Master’s Supervised Research for two credit hours. I’m actually going to be participating in ENG 583 Analyzing Verbal Data, but only doing 2 credit hours worth of work in that 3 credit-hour class. Instead of doing the class project that’s part of that course, I’m going to be applying what I learn to the analysis of data collected by the professor in his current research project.
At the end of my advising session, I asked Dr. Dicks, who is one of my ENG 675 project consultants, how his feedback on draft one of my project document was coming along, which he’s committed to return to me by tomorrow. He noted that he’s found “nothing glaring” in my document, which is good news.
I met Joe at Flex at 10, where we played a couple of games of pool and drank cheap cocktails ($1.25 well drink night). At a little after 11, we went over to CCs for a while for the tail end of the “Price & Rice Show,” which is not the real name of the gig, but rather the names of the two guys who emcee open mic.
I left between 12 and 12:30, and left Joe there to finish up his last Yuengling, which is the special of the day there.
