Working on a Sunday, a paper pile review, chives vs. scallions, dirty drinks, and my diploma…

I spent most of my day editing today, stopping only long enough to meet Joe at Helios at 6:00, where I went through the pile of paperwork he is signing in applying for a home loan.

Since he’s never bought a house before, and I’ve bought several, he asked me to take a look at the pile to see if its contents look “normal.” I totally understand how daunting it is if you’ve never done it before. If you think that’s bad, wait until the closing.

While we did this, the rest of the world, presumably, was watching the Super Bowl. Myself, I only know one of the two teams playing, the New England Patriots, but not who the other team is. And I only know about the Patriots because in that favorite section of The Week that I mentioned, “It was a good week for… and It was a bad week for…,” this was one of the items under “It was a good week for…”:

Boston sports fans, after the New England Patriots beat the San Diego Chargers to go 18-0 for the season and qualify for the Super Bowl. In October, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, and the Boston Celtics currently have the best record in the National Basketball Association.

I know my dad is happy about this, since we’re originally from Fall River, Massachusetts (where Lizzie Borden took an ax…), about 50 miles south of Boston.  I’ll look at the headlines later this evening to see who the other team was and who won. That saves a lot of time.

I only spent an hour with Joe, and after that, he left, and I got right back to editing.

Helios closed at 9:15 tonight, instead of 10:00, for an unknown reason—at least to me. Customer service-oriented Ian at least came by my table at about 8:45 and said, “John, I just want to give you a heads up that we’ll be closing tonight in about 30 minutes,” which I very much appreciated.

On the way home, I stopped at Food Lion, where I bought:

  • Diet Rite Cola (on sale from $4.69 a 12-pack to $2.50)
  • shrimp (buy an $11-dollar bag, get a second one free)
  • Kraft Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese (also on sale or I would have gotten Food Lion brand)
  • cantaloupe chunks (this is my last time buying these if they aren’t good, as they’re too expensive to not be good, and the last container I of them I got weren’t)
  • black olives
  • some whole-wheat wraps
  • some sliced mushrooms
  • a Hot House tomato ($1.81 for one medium-sized tomato—ridiculously expensive), and
  • some cocktail sauce.

Once home, I looked up the difference between chives and sliced scallions, as when I chopped up my scallions earlier in the week, they looked just like chives to me. Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh yeah, that reminds me that when I got back from Augusta, I also looked up to see what makes a martini dirty, as the guy sitting next to me at that bar I went to, ordered a martini and said, “Make it extra dirty.”

Now that I know, I might try to order my next Bloody Mary “extra dirty,” as I think I’d like it that way, if they make Bloody Marys that way. I don’t see why not.

I forgot to mention this yesterday: The USPS delivered a hard 12.5 x 15-inch envelope to my door—my Master of Science diploma, which I keep stealing a glance at every time I walk by my sofa, upon which it presently sits.

I continued to edit into the wee hours of the morning. Did I mention that this edit is taking me way longer than I want it to?
