Good sleep, stars schmars, working out, wooing a potential grad student, and Bob Young’s talk…

After 10 hours of sleep, I got up at 6:00. Sweet!

Breakfast consisted of a hard-boiled egg, two turkey sausage patties, and coffee. I do miss not having some kind of bread (namely toast, an English muffin, or a bagel) for breakfast, but surprisingly, not as much as I thought I would, since I’d pretty much convinced myself that the world would come to an end if I didn’t.

I worked from home today, and connected into two conference calls: one on globalization of our products and publications, and the other a status meeting.

Due to a commercial I heard on the radio the other day, I was thinking about purchasing a star—for the low, low price of $59.99—for a person to remain unnamed for an anniversary coming up in April. After reading Name a Star? The Truth about Buying Your Place in Heaven, I think I’ll pass.

“It’s also important for potential buyers to know what they’d actually get. Pretty much nothing, beyond some very expensive paper.” What a crock!

This is an aside about the article: I love, love, love the author’s “voice” in the article linked to above. For example, with regards to different companies each being free to name the same star a different name, he says, “And anyway, it’s not often Judge Judy hears someone say, ‘Hey pal, that’s my wife’s star!'”

I met both Kevin (av8rdude) and Joe at Planet Fitness for today’s workout. It’s the first time all three of us have been there at the same time, and it’s the first time all three of us have been somewhere at the same time without drinks in our hands.

I didn’t listen to my iPod while working out today, nor did I get sucked into any television, so I had dozens of random thoughts throughout the hour, three of which were:

  1. Is the designation soap opera derived from the fact that the shows used to be sponsored by soap companies?
  2. What is the difference between drama and melodrama?
  3. Has anyone opened a gym in which all of the energy being expended on the treadmills, stair-steppers (of all variety), cycling machines, and rowing machines is captured to generate electricity?

I met Dr. Dicks and a potential graduate student to the MS in Technical Communications program, Katie from Macon, at his office to take Katie over to Bruegger’s to chat about the program.

To my delight, Brian Swiger was there, as was Jenny Frye, who I haven’t seen in forever and didn’t realize she’d moved back here from Colorado. Yay!

We gave Katie all the scoop on all the professors and on the program and the area, and then she and I headed over to Centennial Campus to see Bob Young’s talk as part of The Fidelity Investments “Leadership in Technology” Executive Speakers Series. He was very engaging and the topic was fascinating. I’m glad I went.

I thought this was rather ingenious of myself: I didn’t know where the “Engineering Building II” was, but as I was at the light on Western Blvd., waiting to turn left onto Avent Ferry, the Wolfline (NC State’s Campus Bus System) bus marked ENGINEERING went straight across on its green light. Our light turned green next, and I followed that bus right to the engineering buildings. Sweet!
