Making up on the bus, my heart takes a trip back in time, and somebody’s leg gets puked on…

~Friday~  I had planned on driving to work again today, but since the city bus was due pretty much at the time I was ready, I went ahead and caught it in. The weather was a perfect 68° this morning.

A lady to the left of me and up a row read a book that was too far away—and whose font was too small—for me to discern a title or a chapter name of it, although it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

A lady to the left of me and one row back stayed slumped forward in her seat with her head face down on her arms, which were wrapped around the handle on the seat in front of her. I just don’t know how people can sleep on the bus, unless their final destination is the end of the line.

At the Gorman and Conifer stop, a plus-sized woman (who may have been the sweaty-breast and do-my-bracelet lady from the other day) boarded with a large purse, a plastic shopping bag, and a suitcase that was too large to be an airline carry-on, so good thing she was on a bus and not a plane, eh? She spent a good deal of the rest of my time on the bus working on her make-up, trying desperately not to poke herself in the eye or put lipstick on her cheeks instead of her lips o’er the bumpy ride.

At the Gorman and Marcom stop, a lady boarded who had on somewhat of a dressy dress, but when she passed by me to take the seat behind me, she wafted pure-T-ashtray. Klassy.

My boss started her vacation today, so was not in the office and is off all next week.

I thought I might get out of there early today, but it didn’t happen. I caught the 5:00 bus home.

I went to the gym with the intent of doing my upper body workout, followed by 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical machine, but after the 40-minute upper body routine, I decided to get my cardio by walking around nearby Lake Johnson instead, since there was still a good hour until sunset and the weather was so nice.

I was delighted to find all of the construction that’s been going on around the lake for months now finally completed. It made for a very pleasant walk. Three miles in 50 minutes.

I got kind of contemplative during my walk, thinking about yesterday being a year already since my ex-wife’s brother died, and with tomorrow being her birthday. And then this song came on my iTouch, which was popular at the time I came out to her and during which we were exploring options for our future, reading up on mixed-orientation couples and how they, on average, usually only last for five years, hence leading to our eventual decision of cutting our losses and moving on. Especially since we were both in our mid-30s already by then.

I remember us wondering whenever this song came on back then, “Wonder what our lives will look like, say ten years from now, and what we’ll think and how we’ll feel about where we’ve been.”

What Might Have Been by Little Texas

Sure I think about you now and then
But it’s been a long, long time
I’ve got a good life now, and I’ve moved on
So when you cross my mind…

I try not to think about what might have been
Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can’t go back again
There’s no use givin in
And theres no way to know
What might have been

We can sit and talk about this all night long
And wonder why we didn’t last
Yes, they might be the best days we will ever know
But we’ll have to leave them in the past…

So try not to think about what might have been
Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can’t go back again
There’s no use givin in
And theres no way to know
What might have been

That same old look in your eyes
It’s a beautiful night, I’m so tempted to stay
But too much time has gone by
We should just say good bye, and turn and walk away…

And try not to think about what might have been
Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can’t go back again
There’s no use givin in
And theres no way to know
What might have been
No we’ll never know, what might have been

It’s been twelve years now, and I’m still incredibly moved by this song.

I drove home via Gorman Street to take a quick look at that gotraingle.org sign, and it has finally been fixed. Over a month to rip off the number 1 sticker, followed by the number 2 sticker, under the word CAT.

sign when the '12' was stil on it

I got to The Borough between 10 and 10:30, where I hung out with Phil and Joe and a couple of their friends.

Toward the end of the evening this guy named Rob, who used to bartend at Flex, but evidently has picked himself up a little drinking problem, came up to our table with two cocktails in one hand and a glass of beer in the other. The hand holding the beer was wobbling so much that beer was spelling spilling out of it onto Michael L., who the beer was presumably for. And not long after that, he knocked over a drink, which went all over the floor around the table.

Look at the time! Joe convinced Phil to go to Legends, as I volunteered to take Phil in free as my guest, and we watched the midnight drag show. I saw my friend Kurt there, who later posted a status update to Facebook that said, “Some girl just puked on my leg.”

It was just that kind of night, I reckon.
