A little work, a wet workout, coffee w/Katherine, a trip East, and Friday night out…

I logged in to work this morning, and did a quick 3-page edit.

From 11:00–12:00, I connected in to the Tivoli Editors Council meeting, and “in the background” had a quick instant message discussion with the writer of that 3-page edit I had returned to him right before the call. He had questions about two things I had marked up, which we quickly resolved.

I met Kevin (av8rdude) at the gym for a 12:15–1:15 workout.

I’m starting to fit into some different clothes now, and I put on a shirt in which to work out that I bought for training during the AIDS ride. It’s one of those shirts that, supposedly, pulls the water off your body and into it.

Well, I’m here to report that it is evidently doing that, which is the good news—I guess. That bad news is that once it pulls all that sweat away from my body and into the shirt, the shirt gets so saturated that the water has to go somewhere else. Guess where! In my shorts.

I used to be able to get away with just changing my shirt to drive home; now I have to change my shirt and my pants. I’m still sorting out how I feel about all that.

I listened to another great The Story podcast today, about a woman who not only got her identity stolen, but after a couple of months recognized the woman who stole it and chased her all around San Francisco to apprehend her.

I had the most delicious lunch after my workout: some of that zesty herb turkey tenderloin sliced, and put on a sun-dried tomato wrap with some mayo, cheese, onions, and jalapeños. Yum, yum, yum!

I got a very affirming e-mail from my friend Irene regarding getting together with her daughter, Katherine, this afternoon when she arrives at RDU, and while she waits for a friend of hers arriving on a later flight and her brother, who’s coming to Raleigh to pick up both of them, and drive them all to Washington, DC later this evening:

John,

You are without a doubt, one of the most phenomenal gifts in my life. What is of paramount value to me is that you embrace all that I bring to the table… with a cheerful heart, a giving nature… and most probably a SONG!

Thank you so much for opening your arms to those people who mean so much to me and making each life a little better just because you’re in it.

Not to mention multiple 11th hour airport runs, XLE-top of the line “all points east” limousine service, Paradise Point shrimp cocktails, extended kitchen privileges for “extended family” gatherings, travel west of the Mississippi, podcasts, late night conversations…listening, laughing, crying, sharing, dancing, singing… you are what friends are all about!! Perfect Harmony!!

How did one girl with one big family get so lucky!!! SWAK!

That warms my heart to the core.

Katherine and I hung out at the New World Coffee House for about an hour-and-a-half, before I took her back to the airport to meet up with Andrew (her brother) and Nicole (Andrew’s girlfriend).

We had good coffee, great conversation on various and sundry topics, and it was all just an absolute delight, just as I expected. We talked about school, about dogs and their owners, and about Craigslist postings and posters.

At home, in my mail was a letter from the Society for Technical Communication, which has partnered with People to People Citizen Ambassador Programs to participate in “an international professional and cultural program, developing a delegation of professionals specializing in technical communication to meet in China in 2008.”

“This delegation will discuss ways to exchange information and to explore our similarities and differences. Each delegate will have opportunities to learn more about China and to connect at a personal level with our Chinese colleagues. The goals are simple: to share the knowledge we bring with us, to obtain knowledge that we can take home, to establish professional relationships, and to encourage participants to share best practices long after the delegation returns home.”

The delegation will depart for China from Los Angeles on October 19, 2008. Following the professional and cultural program in Beijing, they’ll travel to Guilin and Shanghai for further professional and cultural exchange. They will arrive back in the United States on October 31st. An optional excursion, after the main program, will take participating delegates to Hong Kong, to enjoy a variety of cultural activities.

I am so in on this trip. I love the fact that I won’t have to do any planning or organizing of an itinerary, and that there is the intellectual element to it in addition to the cultural element.

Also, I will most likely do the optional excursion to Hong Kong. I can’t pass up the opportunity to see Hong Kong while I’m already over there. Sweet!

I met Joe at Flex between 9:30 and 10:00, where it was that godawful 120 Minutes night; but, surprise of surprises, it wasn’t godawful. They played some pretty decent music tonight.

We went over to Legends at around midnight for the 12:30 show, which for reasons unbeknownst to us, was held on the dance floor where it used to be held before they put in the new stage lounge. Shrug.
