I met Kevin (av8rdude) at the gym at 1:00, where it was an all-cardio day for me. I forgot to start with some crunches, so they were out of the question—as all three sections of the ab bench would be absolutely drenched with sweat if I did them after my hour of cardio. Not to mention how gross it would be for my totally saturated t-shirt to be clinging to my body as I did them. Gross.

Passing the NC State University campus on the way to Helios, I was reminded that it’s graduation day, specifically by the traffic on the other side of the divided road I was on, which is the campus side of the road. I then thought of “my kids” in the Tech Comm program who are graduating today. Yay them!
There were definitely a couple of graduates at Helios with their families, manifesting themselves in two different parties of eight people.
I forgot to capture two affirmations from last night:
- At one point while Joe and I were playing pool, he said toward me, “Move away from me you skinny bitch.” Naturally, I turned around to see who he was talking to behind me. He said, “You! You can really tell you’ve lost weight tonight.” Sweet.
- Later in the evening Joe had obviously just told my age to Todd, who was just in total disbelief, so much so that he came up to me (and he has never spoken to me before—though his partner, Juan, does regularly), and he said, “I’m going to call you on this, because I don’t believe him. You’re not really 50 years old, are you???” Sweeter.
And another affirmation today, from my friend Peg, who’s running her first half-marathon to raise money for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and to whose commitment I’ve made a donation:
John,
YOU are AWESOME! I was SO excited to see that I had another comment on my page—and your donation- WOW!! As usual, I am humbled by your generosity of spirit and I am so honored to call you my friend. Thank you so much for your donation and your support. It means a lot to me both for the LLS aspect and for personal reasons. Really really reeeeeeally thank you. Peg |
I met Robert in Durham at a little after 5:00, and we had the most fabulous dinner at Taverna Nikos in Brightleaf Square.
They had a special menu today for the graduations going on in the area universities, with Duke being in the neighborhood, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill not far away. We started off with their incredibly delicious Tzatziki appetizer. Robert had the Grilled Duck and I had the Lobster & Feta Cheese Ravioli, which I just loved.
On the way out, we stopped at Amelia Cafe, right there in Brightleaf as well, where Robert had a small cup of pistachio ice cream and I had a small cup of rum raisin. It was all good.
We drove over to the Liberty Warehouse to see a play called @ liberty, which I’d heard about via a video review of it in @abbyladybug’s blog, and which was staged by Both Hands Theater.
I was amused by the e-mail I got back from the company, after purchasing my tickets online, with the following caveat emptor in it, starting off with, “Liberty warehouse is a unique non-theatre space, so it has some quirky features:
- Limited climate control is one of them, so please keep in mind that the temperature outside will likely be the temperature inside: please dress accordingly.
- Because of the age of the building, Liberty is dusty with uneven flooring and 2 lovely resident cats, so please keep that in mind if you have allergies and when determining your footwear.
- Liberty warehouse also has a roof that amplifies the sound of rain considerably and could make it difficult to hear during performances. If we decide to cancel a show due to thunderstorms, we will make that decision on the day of the performances and contact you via phone or email.”
This play was absolutely phenomenal. Robert and I both loved it.

After a quick stop by home, I met Joe @ Flex, where it was Foot Fetish Night—free admission if wearing flip-flops—and where Joe and I promptly paid to get in with our tennis shoes tightly tied.
Chris (zinnian) evidently put down GTA4 long enough to grace the social scene with his presence. Rick Enlow was also out and about tonight, hoping to hook up with Military Mary et al., who actually ended up just as we were leaving at around midnight. We also spent some time chatting with Joe and Phil, who made a short appearance this evening as well.
On the way over to CCs, we made a pit stop @ The Borough, where I had their Jalapeño Queso Dip (today’s special), and Joe had an order of cheese fries. Just a soak-up-some-of-this-alcohol stop.
Joe’s friends from Goldsboro were at CCs, and I met them for the second time and then promptly forgot their names—yet again. I think one of them is Phil. Mark, maybe, the other one? [ Update: They’re Bill and Dave. Not even close, though Bill does sound like Phil, so maybe a half-a-point for that.]
“Mayo” was out in all of her Elvis-white outfit glory, accessorized with Mr. T gold baubles, sporting glistening perspiration, complete with a wrinkled, rawhide, and unnaturally brown epidermis, topped off with black Polaroids to protect her eyes from her own DayGlo. But I’d rather walk on my lips than criticize.
