David Rakoff, who is just absolutely hysterical in my book, said the greatest thing on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me the other day.
With the recent California decision about gay marriage, he was talking about this inane notion that letting gay people get married will denigrate the institution of marriage, by saying: “It’s like seeing an amputee making his way down the street, and checking to make sure your own limbs are still there.” In writing this, it occurred to me that I’ve never actually seen David Rakoff, so I did what one does these days in that situation: I checked YouTube for something by him. This 3-minute, 51-second video definitely lets you see him (via an in depth examination of his own face), as well as sample his humor: |

I have had a lazy, lazy day, which I’m trying to be “okay” with.
I slept in. I finished Eat, Pray, Love. I napped.
Not nearly as rhythmical (or impressive) as “veni, vidi, vici.”

Two e-mail affirmations today: 1) From someone who read my NCSU ENG 515 blog, which is linked off the home page of the Master of Science in Technical Communication home page at N.C. State, and 2) from Jeanie-baby’s son-in-law’s sister, Linda.
Hi John,
Loved your blog! I just graduated with a bachelors degree in Liberal Studies and I’m thinking about applying for the M.S. Tech Communication degree. Can you give me an idea of what graduate classes are like? Thanks, |
John: I so enjoyed meeting you at the celebration of Jeanie-Baby’s life. I know that to have a great friend, you must be one. My hope is that when I leave this world, I will leave a lot of great friends – like you. Linda Engle (Jim’s sister) To which I responded: Hello Linda, This just warms my heart. Thank you for taking the time to write it. It was a pleasure meeting you and your family as well. P&J probably made you a copy (if you wanted one) of Jeane’s eulogy, but just in case, you can download it from here: http://www.nematome.info/JeanesEulogy.doc I hope your day turns out as heartwarming as you’ve made mine! Warmest regards, And to which she responded: John: Thanks for the copy of Jeannie’s eulogy. This saves me from bothering Phyllis and Jim for one. You graciously went to your car to get copies of the article you referred to in the eulogy. Thanks again and, if you don’t mind, I’ll be checking up on you through your “live journal” (very interesting). |
I met Joe at Carrabba’s in Cary, where we had dinner mostly on one of his birthday gift cards. We split an appetizer of calamari, and then split two pizzas—Four Cheese with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, and the Margherita.
Dancing was fun tonight. There weren’t many bar patrons, and the dancers included: Bill, Carl, Geromy, Ernie, Michael, Eric, and Stephen.
I stopped by the Cameron Village Library on the way home, and deposited Eat, Pray, Love into the adult book return. It’s due tomorrow.
I resisted, with all my might, a stop at Cook Out for one of their Banana Shakes.
