Love in the Time of Cholera

~Saturday~  Bob and I watched Love in the Time of Cholera, which he graciously rented from NetFlix on my behalf.

My Mostly Social Book Club is currently reading the book, and I’d already read it in February of 1995, as a member of another book club, The Nematomes. I checked it out from the library, and after two renewals, while making little progress, I decided to abandon it and watch the movie instead. It’s quite a long, and arduous read.

The synopsis

Florentino, rejected by the beautiful Fermina at a young age, devotes much of his adult life to carnal affairs as a desperate attempt to heal his broken heart.

My thoughts and observations

  • I liked this movie, but I didn’t love it. I don’t remember the male protagonist of the story being so pathetic while reading the book. Pick up the shattered pieces of your life and move on already.
  • Themes (as eloquently worded from SparkNotes) touched on:
    • Love as an emotional and physical plague
    • The fear and intolerance of aging and death
    • Suffering in the name of love
  • I was glad I just watched the movie rather than schlepping through the book again.
  • Overall, one thumb up. If you like long, soulmate, love-conquers-all, dependent-victim stories, you’ll like it more than I did.

Have you seen this movie? If so, what did you think of it?
